    Description

Purinton created Slip Ware pottery until the company closed in 1959. Slip refers to the slurry made with clay, water and powdered color. It is then applied by hand to the raw pottery to create colorful designs. The raw ware was then dipped in glaze and fired only once at very high temperature. The colors you see cannot be removed and the process makes this pottery dishwasher and oven safe.
This beautiful set is in remarkable condition. Only 7 (seven) of the 79 pieces have small chips. The chip on the inside rim of the tea pot looks intentional because the top is very tight and the controlled chip makes it easier to remove. The last 2 photos show the chips.
Mrs. Dorothy Purinton, wife of the founder Bernard and teacher of the art of Slip Ware, designed the Maywood pattern (also referred to as "Dogwood"). Production of Maywood was limited because the green base color made the slip process more difficult. As is typical with Purinton pottery, most of these pieces have no backstamp. There are no reproductions of Purinton pottery due to the molds being destroyed when the company closed in 1959.
